Fayette County Bar Association

In 2017, the Fayette County Bar Association enjoyed great success under the direction of our Past President, Jordan M. Jewkes. Last year, the Fayette County Bar Association, working in concert with the Fayette County Board of Education, the Honorable Jason B. Thompson (Fayette County State Court Judge) and the Honorable Christopher C. Edwards (Chief Superior Court Judge, Griffin Judicial Circuit) brought a panel from the Georgia Court of Appeals to Whitewater High School, allowing hundreds of high school students from across the county to witness live oral arguments. Prior to this event, volunteer attorneys from the Fayette Bar visited every high school in the county to teach the students about the appellate process and provided an overview of the cases and the issues presented. The Bar also hosted its annual CLE conference at the Fayette County Justice Center, supported graduation ceremonies for DUI and Drug Court participants, collected toys to donate to foster children at Christmas, and engaged in community service and outreach.

I am pleased to report that 2018 looks to be an equally auspicious year. This winter, local attorneys Jim Webb and Joseph Knight worked with the Fayette Bar to establish The People’s Law School, a series of lectures from Fayette County lawyers designed to provide the public with an overview of basic legal principles and to educate attendees about their legal rights and obligations. In March, the Fayette Bar, in conjunction with Lindsey & Lacy, P.C. and financial planner Brian M. Chustz, hosted a Judges’ Panel on Professionalism at the Whitewater Country Club. In addition to hosting members of the Judiciary, the Bar has also hosted representatives from the Southern Conservation Trust and renowned trial attorney and DUI guru William C. “Bubba” Head.

If you are an attorney who either lives or practices in Fayette County, I welcome you to come to our meetings, which are typically held the first Thursday of each month. Also, consider attending our annual Continuing Legal Education conference, which will take place in Amicalola Falls in October. In addition to being informative, our CLE is a unique opportunity for local lawyers and judges to network and, more importantly, get to know each other outside of the courtroom.

Fifty-five years ago, my grandfather helped establish the Fayette County Bar Association. Since then, it has grown and prospered thanks to the hard work of local attorneys and judges who care deeply about Fayette County and its people. I am proud to carry the torch this year.
